Golf Day 2026

OR Golf Day Friday 10th April 2026
OR Golf Day Friday 10th April 2026

We were once again very fortunate to have fine weather for the Old Ruymian Golf Day at the North Foreland Golf Course. The golfers for the main Foreland course – Jeremy Parkin, John Darby, Terry Gillilland, Tony Nicolaou, Ty Harding, Andy Mair, Grant Fennell, Mark Lewis, Peter Jones and last year’s winner Rob Green – met for coffee and bacon rolls before being seen off at the first by the usual entourage of Tommy Thomas, Bern Chitty and Tony Debling shortly after the scheduled tee time of 10.00am. The fine weather and particularly gentle breeze were supportive for all, but particularly for Terry Gilliland who won the main event with a Stableford score of 39 points off of a handicap of 18. John Darby was a commendable second with 35 points. Newcomer Grant Fennell, met the expectations of his fellow quantity surveyor Jeremy Parkin when he picked up the longest drive, and also bagged the nearest the pin. There was a suspicion that he was the only one to make the green on that hole.

The short course players – David Wake, Dave Dixon, Paul Goatham, Phil Goldsmith, Tony Debling and Peter Arnold – were supported by Colin Davey, and got of to a prompt start at midday. Contrary to accusations of a week of solid practice on the short course, David Wake, in spite of arriving in an unpractised state was able to retain the short course crown. He consistently hit the green and in spite of indifferent putting returned a steady 75, comfortably beating the field whose scores will remain undisclosed. The mooted prize for the Longest Walk was hotly contested.

A hearty lunch was enjoyed in the restaurant afterwards – Steak Pie, Stuffed Peppers, Bread and Butter Pudding and Chocolate Brownies were on the menu. The golfers were joined by Mike & Bonnie Tyrrell, David & Elizabeth Carr, John & Carole Copeland, Tommy Thomas and Colin Davey. Sadly Janet Hughes' social diary meant she was already accounted for. Barry Holton, Tony Tucker and Nicol Holladay sent best wishes.
Prizes were distributed and the staff at North Foreland, particularly the restaurant staff, thanked before the day closed. Details for next year’s event will follow in due course.
